PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING SOME OF YOUR TIME TO HELP PUEBLO KIDS!!!! School is back in session and the kids at Irving School are ready to have some great mentors (that is us, the Rotary members!!) read and interact with them.

The time commitment depends on you and the teacher. You could visit the classroom every week for 20-30-45 minutes (depends on grade level and attention span-the kids not you) or every other week but it is very important that you set up a regular schedule with the teacher so the kids can see a constant positive influence from the community. Irving will have a Book Fair in October and I will purchase some books for you to read and give to the classroom but in the meantime the teacher can give you some books to read or you can dig out some of the old books from your kids or grand kids to read and leave behind in the room or you can go and buy a book or 2. The teacher can help you decide on what books would be good to read or you can just remember back to when you were a kid or when your kids were small and what they liked to read. Extra stuff for the kids....some of us that have been reading to the kids for several years get rather involved in the class we adopt and bring treats (they prefer nutritious ones but I slip in a few cookies or candy for the holidays, etc.!!), give them pens or pencils, bookmarks or gifts for the holidays. The kids are delightful and appreciate anything you give them including a hug, a compliment or the time to answer or ask a few questions. Your time is the most important part..........but many of the kids come from terrible home situations and they don't have enough school supplies or gloves or little extras. We need readers for all classes from kindergarten through 5th grade. The older grades will be chapter books so it will take several weeks to read a book. Burnie Z. can answer any questions about reading to older kids while I can answer questions about the younger grades. If you have already volunteered to read, THANKS!!!, but I need to know what grade you would prefer to read to and I can get you in touch with your teacher. So if you would like to volunteer to read to Irving kids, please let me know. The kids will love having you in the classroom and you will love being there. Thanks!
